The best part about living in metropolitan areas are the well-known, but well-hidden “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants. These coveted locations are indeed local gems that serve authentic, delicious food that is unlike any other. Nestled in a quiet block on Second Street in Downtown San Jose is Angelou’s Mexican Grill. Here, you will find one of the best places to satisfy your Mexican food cravings!
Tacos, Burritos, and Nachos…oh my!
Angelou’s menu is simple. The restaurant features a variety of tacos, burritos, and other Mexican favorites served with your choice of meat. Though, the star of the show is the Cali Loco Moco Burrito. If you love a runny egg and french fries inside your Al Pastor burrito, this one’s for you! The Cali Loco Moco Burrito is a local favorite and the ultimate comfort food.
However, my personal favorite of Angelou’s are the Carne Asada fries. The Carne Asada fries are a modern take on loaded nachos. This dish features a colorful melody of guacamole, pico de gallo, nacho cheese, sour cream, and carne asada (steak) all on top of a bed of crispy french fries. While other taquerias in Downtown San Jose serve similar dishes as well, none of them do it better than Angelou’s.
The Orange Sauce
Angelou’s is also in the running for “Best Orange Sauce in Town.” The legendary orange sauce is a creamy, spicy, and flavorful sauce that goes well with all your taqueria menu items. Angelou’s orange sauce has a wonderful balance of heat and flavor that gets you coming back for more. Whether you like to add a little bit of orange sauce on each bite or you prefer to drench your food in it, the sauce is a must-have addition to your meal. If you do end up falling in love with Angelou’s Orange Sauce, you can even purchase a bottle to-go!
